I’m thrilled to be holding a new solo exhibition of twelve portraits of Spanish historical personages, Andalusian Pageant, at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge CB3 0DF from 11 – 16 March 2023. I am an Emeritus Fellow of Murray Edwards College, and it houses the largest collection of modern and contemporary women’s art in Europe. The Collection was founded in 1986 with the acquisition of Mary Kelly’s six-part work Extase and has evolved through gifts and loans from artists and alumnae. Today it includes over 500 works by leading international artists, including Dame Paula Rego, Maggi Hambling CBE, Lubaina Himid CBE and Judy Chicago.
The Andalusian Pageant will be on show in the fabulous modern lecture theatre in Buckingham House. These paintings were inspired by the books I have written, and form a painted procession of colourful historical personages who played significant roles in the most important and dramatic era in the history of the Iberian Peninsula, the time between the years 711 and 1492 when what are now Spain and Portugal were part of the first Islamic caliphate in Europe. I will be giving at artist talk on Friday 17 March at 5.30pm, and there is a Meet the Artist morning on Tuesday 21 March 10.00am – 12.30pm. It would be wonderful to see you there, and it’s possible to visit the main Women’s Art collection too.
